Ancient star trails
Startrails and the ancient temple in Delphi, Greece.
According to the ancient Greeks, Delphi was the center of the Earth. The brightest star trail above the ancient temple is planet Jupiter.
Temple and Milky Way

Saint John chapel stars and clouds
This moonlit image was taken at Sounio, few hundred meters away from the temple of Poseidon.
Shooting startrails under the full Moon’s bright light creates a rather unusual scene. The landscape is fully illuminated and the sky is blue, just like in a daylight photo. This image is the result of 209 stacked consecutive shots displaying Saint John, a small deserted church, framed by some ruins from an old house. The sky is dominated by two kinds of trails. Star trails and cloud trails! Note the small gaps on the cloud trails, a result of the 1 second intervals between the shots.

Η λήψη έγινε στο Σούνιο, σε μικρή απόσταση από το ναό του Ποσειδώνα, υπό το άπλετο φως της πανσέληνου. Η νυχτερινή φωτογράφηση κάτω από αυτές τις συνθήκες δημιουργεί μια απόκοσμη αίσθηση. Το τοπίο είναι πλήρως φωτισμένο και ο ουρανός είναι μπλε όπως ακριβώς σε μια λήψη κατά τη διάρκεια της ημέρας. Η εικόνα είναι το αποτέλεσμα της συνάθροισης 209 διαδοχικών λήψεων. Σε πρώτο πλάνο το εκκλησάκι του Αγίου Ιωάννη, πλαισιωμένο από χαλάσματα παλιού σπιτιού. Στον ουρανό κυριαρχούν δύο ειδών ίχνη: Αστρικές ιχνογραμμές και η πορεία που διέγραψαν κάποια μικρά σύννεφα που βρέθηκαν στο πλάνο για λίγα λεπτά. Προσέξτε τα μικρά κενά στα σύννεφα, αποτέλεσμα του μεσοδιαστήματος διάρκειας ενός δευτερολέπτου ανάμεσα στις λήψεις.

At the foreground you see Portara which literally translates to ‘Big Door’, the remaining of an unfinished ancient temple dedicated to Apollo, the Greek god of the Sun.

St Joseph and the Moon

Contrary to most of my photos, this was not a scheduled shooting. I just saw the Moon aligned with the statue, as I was passing by Newbury, stopped the car, grabbed the camera and took the photo.
Stonehenge sunrise.

This photo is the result of several attempts in Stonehenge, trying to capture a picturesque sunrise.

Moonset at the Temple of Poseidon
This is the least popular angle for this kind of photos, yet equally impressive.
For some reason, most of the similar photos (if not all) from many photographers, are facing east. This is facing west, during moon set. In this photo Moon is still relatively high, almost 4 degrees above the horizon, therefore it is still possible to see many details on the lunar surface. The shot was taken few minutes before sunrise.

Δύση Σελήνης στο ναό του Ποσειδώνα. Από αυτή την γωνία, η Σελήνη είναι ακόμα σχετικά ψηλά, (σχεδόν 4 μοίρες πάνω από τον ορίζοντα) οπότε μπορούμε να διακρίνουμε αρκετές λεπτομέρειες στην επιφάνεια της. Η λήψη έγινε λίγα λεπτά πριν την ανατολή του Ήλιου.
Athens New Moon
Τhe 23 hour new Moon sets behind mount Lycabettus.
Good atmospheric conditions are crucial in order to view or capture the thin crescent. During the shooting, Moon was invisible to the unaided eye.

H νέα Σελήνη 23 ωρών, δύει πίσω από τον Άγιο Γεώργιο στον Λυκαβηττό. Οι ατμοσφαιρικές συνθήκες παίζουν πολύ σημαντικό ρόλο στην θέαση του λεπτού μηνίσκου. Κατά την φωτογράφηση, η Σελήνη δεν φαινόταν με γυμνό μάτι.

Church Moonrise

Perhaps the greatest challenge for capturing the Moon against an earthy foreground is the illumination balance between the foreground and the Moon. It seems that the optimum time to capture such a scene is few minutes after sunset. Other factors of course must be considered like the elevation of the photographer’s and the subject’s position from the sea level and the terrestrial morphology.

Ίσως η μεγαλύτερη πρόκληση κατά την φωτογράφηση της Σελήνης σε συνδυασμό με τοπία, είναι η ισορροπία του φωτός μεταξύ της Σελήνης και του τοπίου. Η ιδανική ώρα για αυτό το εγχείρημα είναι λίγα λεπτά μετά την δύση του Ήλιου. ’λλοι παράγοντες που πρέπει να συνεκτιμηθούν είναι το υψόμετρο στο οποίο βρίσκονται ο φωτογράφος και το θέμα αντίστοιχα καθώς και η μορφολογία του εδάφους.

The huge Sun effect is accomplished by using a telescope. The distance from the foreground was more than 4km. The technique is known as lens compression.

Mount Athos and Orion constellation
This is a photo taken from inside Iviron monastery at Mount Athos.
At the background, Orion constellation dominates the fabulous Athonite night sky. Despite the freezing cold I enjoyed every second of the shooting which lasted only about ten minutes before the clouds hide the stars for the rest of the evening.

Mount Athos startrails
This is star trail photo of the Simonopetra monastery.
The monastery was founded during the 13th century. It is built on top of a single massive rock and many describe it as the boldest construction among all monasteries of Athos Mount. The night sky above Athos Mount is truly exceptional essentially free of any source of light pollution.

Agiou Andrea Russian Skite is the most representative example of the Russian monasticism at the beginning of the 20th century.
It lies in a small distance from the administrative center of Mount Athos, Karyes. It is also called Seragi, from the words ‘Sei-rai’ which means paradise for the Russians. It belongs to Vatopedi monastery. This High Dynamic Range startrail photo displays one of the impressive buildings from inside the complex. The wealth and magnificence that characterizes the Russian Skite is exactly the opposite from the sense of humility and simplicity that represents the life in Mount Athos.
