Moon and Mars occultation. This is a Full Mineral Moon and Mars Occultation! Although Mars is about twice the size of our Moon, it looks really small as it is 200 times farther than the Moon at its closest approach. After a demanding post-process, I managed to create an image that combines several Moon features. Planet occultation is a rare event occurring every few years. Moon colours are real, greatly exaggerated in post-process, indicating our satellite’s geology. The glow is the actual Moonglow from an overexposed image. More info:

Moon illusion.
It is a commonly held belief that the Moon appears larger near the horizon as a result of some kind of magnification effect caused by the Earth’s atmosphere.
This is not correct. Although the atmosphere does change the color of the Moon, the measured optical angle of the Moon’s vertical diameter is smaller for the horizon moon than for the zenith moon, therefore when the rising moon is on the horizon it appears (both visually and in photographs) to be a bit squashed down (ovoid).

Moon on fire
On the night of June 29, 2007, the Moon above Athens, Greece appeared decidedly ruddy, even well after moonrise.
A huge fire in a nearby forest was responsible for its intense color. The image colors shown here are real. Small smoke particles scatter the shorter wavelengths of light (blues and greens) more efficiently than do larger smoke particles, thus the Moon’s disk on this spooky night was rendered a color somewhere between blood red and pumpkin orange.

Moon and plane
Airplane transit in front of the Moon.
This photo consists of three continuous stacked shots taken approximately at 1/3 second intervals. After many attempts I was successful in capturing my best transit photo so far. I haven’t used any sophisticated devices. The recipe for this shot is simple. A camera attached to an 8 inch dob telescope and a lot of patience. Each an every time on my previous attempts there was something I didn’t like. The camera focus or the focal length or the seeing conditions or the timing wasn’t perfect. Also the fact that the photo was taken during the day and the Sun was low, about 7 degrees above the horizon, resulted to an ideal lighting balance between the Moon and the plane.

Moon, plane and black drop
A most enigmatic phenomenon known as ‘black drop effect’ is known from the planet Venus transitions in front of the Sun.
It is seen when a dark patch appears to connect Venus with the dark sky past the edge of the Sun, sometimes giving Venus a teardrop shape. The leading theory suggests that under exceptional seeing conditions combined with very good optics the effect may not be visible at all. But how all these relate to this image? Look closely to the front of the plane. A distinct black drop effect is visible where the nose of the aircraft approaches the edge of the Moon. In this case, it is more obvious than the typical Sun – Venus black drop effect. Apparently, the effect can be observed and recorded with any transiting object in front of the Sun or the Moon. But why this one is so distinct? Perhaps the speed of the passing object is also a factor. Role the mouse over the picture to see a close up.

The shot was taken at Kos island, Greece. The weather conditions almost ruined my chance to capture this rare astronomical event. After a battle against time and the cloudy sky I was fortunate to capture the transit.
This was the last Venus transit in front of the Sun of the 21st century. The next one will take place on year 2117.

Crescent Moon and Earthshine
Dynamic range in photography is the range of which a camera can efficiently capture the lightest and darkest areas of a scene.
Cameras do not see the world as we do. They just use one f/stop per photo, therefore the result may be an overexposed or underexposed photo. Our eyes can perceive a scene that contains bright highlights and dark shadows as well. A good example is the night sky with the full Moon.
We are able to see easily the Moon, stars and the landscape. If we set the camera to shoot the same scene and adjust it to have a proper exposure of the Moon, the landscape will be dark. If we adjust the camera for the landscape, the Moon will look like a flash of light. The technique used extensively to overcome this barrier is HDR photography.
The idea is to combine shots taken at different exposures, trying to create a more natural view of the scene. This shot is a multi second exposure with a dslr camera on a telescope equipped with an equatorial mount. It shows the crescent Moon (the brightest part) and the rest of the Moon which is fainter. We are able to see the faint part because of the sunlight that hits the Earth and bounces back to the Moon.
This is why these shots are commonly referred to as ‘earth shine’ photos. This is a one shot image. It is not HDR or a composition of many photos. The only process includes saturation, contrast and sharpening adjustments. The technique I used can be described as ‘waiting for the right cloud!’. The particular cloud covered just enough of the Moon’s surface for just enough time to block the bright part, therefore the light that the camera recorded was relatively even.
